Announcing the official launch of 54Ruum: A new chapter for African visual storytelling

Every great evolution begins with a catalyst. If you noticed we went a little quiet over the last few months, thank you for looking for us — we have been thinking about you, too.

Back in May, our community faced an unexpected crossroad. Following a sudden conflict with Meta AI, our original Instagram page was permanently deleted within 24 hours. At the same time, we had to be honest with ourselves: our previous name, PHOTORUUM, was simply too close to a well-known commercial photo editor. The overlap created confusion, and it was holding us back from our true purpose.

Rather than viewing the loss of our page as a defeat, we saw an opportunity to reclaim our story, realign with our mission, and step confidently into a new chapter.

Reclaiming Our Identity: What 54Ruum Means

In entering this new era, we want to share the deliberate intent behind our new name and visual identity, which was crafted in collaboration with the 54grid team:

• What 'Ruum' means: Ruum is our stylised take on “room” — a dedicated, safe space. A space to connect, learn, grow, and be discovered. It is the core of our community.
• What '54' means: The number 54 represents the 54 countries that make up Africa. It is our intentional homage to our roots, and a bold statement about where we are building from — a creative powerhouse rooted in Africa, made for the world.

What is next for the community?

We are back stronger, more structured, and more intentional than ever before. As a proud initiative of our parent organisation, The Ruum Africa Foundation, our core mission remains entirely unchanged: to celebrate, support, and showcase Africa’s most talented photographers and visual artists globally.

54Ruum is a cross-continental movement. We are here to bridge the gap, elevate the overlooked, and give African visual storytellers an independent sanctuary to share their narratives with a global audience.
