Self-taught and driven by a deep passion for continuous learning, Kondwani’s journey began with a fascination for photography from a young age. Initially drawn to the sciences, Kondwani pursued a degree in earth sciences and geology, but his love for visual storytelling eventually led him to make a full-time career in photography.

His experiences in street photography have sharpened his ability to capture candid, unfiltered moments that delve into the deeper realities of life. This path of self-directed education has cultivated a perspective that challenges stereotypes, offering a more nuanced and comprehensive portrayal of African narratives

Whether through personal projects, documentary storytelling, or collaborations with development organisations, his aim is to create images that resonate on a deeper level, fostering connections between collaborators and global audiences. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the global discourse on ethical storytelling, elevating African narratives and inspiring empathy and meaningful change.

What achievement are you most proud of as a photographer?

As a photographer, I am most proud of several key achievements that have helped shape my career and impact. Being featured on one of my client’s podcasts to discuss ethical storytelling in development work stands out as a significant milestone. It provided a platform to share my philosophy and approach to storytelling, especially within the context of development work.

Additionally, my work has been exhibited internationally in Canada as part of the Through My Eyes project, where I contributed to an exhibition on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This opportunity allowed me to showcase my perspective on critical global issues through my photography.

Another accomplishment I hold dear is being part of a hybrid residency with the Market Photo Workshop. This experience provided invaluable mentorship and networking opportunities, further refining my skills and expanding my understanding of ethical storytelling in photography.

How do you feel about the 54Ruum, and how has your experience been so far?

I think 54Ruum is a brilliant initiative that truly celebrates African storytellers by providing a dedicated platform for us to engage and network without the noise and clutter of mainstream social media. It offers a refreshing space for meaningful interactions and collaboration, or even just light hearted banter where we can share our work, experiences, and ideas with like-minded creatives.

Such initiatives are crucial in nurturing talent, fostering connections, and giving visibility to African photographers and storytellers on a global scale. My experience so far has been enriching and inspiring, and I look forward to growing within this community as I take part in it more and more.
