One year of 54Ruum: 12 months of documenting the people behind Africa's visual culture

On 6 August 2025, The Ruum Africa launched 54Ruum with a simple ambition: to create a home for photographers, filmmakers, and visual storytellers across Africa and the diaspora.

Twelve months later, that community spans 36 countries and has grown into an editorial archive of 282 published stories. Every submission has added another perspective to a growing record of African creativity, while every feature has introduced audiences to the people behind the work.

54Ruum has always been shaped by its community. Each portfolio submitted, every conversation shared, and every story published has contributed to the first chapter of our journey. Together, they have formed a body of work that reflects the diversity of experiences, places, and ideas represented across our community.

This year also marked an important step in our editorial journey with the launch of 54Journal, the editorial publication of The Ruum Africa. Every Ruum Spotlight feature has found a dedicated home here, creating a growing archive that preserves the stories we continue to tell while making room for new editorial series in the years ahead.

To mark our first anniversary, we launched a nine-day series revisiting a curated selection of photographs from the Ruumers who have helped shape our community. Running from 1st to 9th August. The series celebrates the creativity, generosity, and trust that have defined 54Ruum's first year.

The months ahead will focus on strengthening the 54Ruum platform, expanding our editorial work through 54Journal, and creating more opportunities for our community across the wider TRA ecosystem.

As we begin our second year, username reservations are now open at 54Ruum.com, allowing photographers, filmmakers, and visual storytellers to secure their identity ahead of the platform's public launch.

To every Ruumer who has shared their work with us, thank you.

Your submissions, stories, and photographs have helped shape the first chapter of 54Ruum. We look forward to everything we will build together in the years ahead.
